Radon Measurement Provider AARST-NRPP (#104686 RT,  Expiration 02/18/2018)
Radon Measurement Specialist NRSB (#11SS013, Expiration 1/30/2018)

For Short-Term Radon Measurements (48 hours to 4 days), Potomac Homes deploys the most accurate professional E-PERM Short-Term Electret Radon Monitors, which are true integrating detectors that can measure fluctuating radon concentration regardless of extreme temperatures or humidity, detecting ions produced by the decay of Radon-222, with exposure times of 48 hours or more. At the end of the tests, Potomac Homes measures the Radon-222 concentrations and, the same day, sends its clients a comprehensive computerized report.

$149.00 in Montgomery County, MD.
$189.00 elsewhere in DMV

Usually, one set is sufficient for a house with a basement footprint of 1,000 sq. ft. or less. However, as per protocol, if there is a partial basement with a crawl space or a living space over a garage or a living space over a slab, we would have to deploy additional sets of two monitors in these living spaces. Additional sets of two monitors are $89 each.

Radon is estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the USA. (EPA's 2003 Assessment of Risks from Radon in Homes - EPA-407-R-03-003)

U.S. Surgeon General Health Advisory

"Indoor radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and breathing it over prolonged periods can present a significant health risk to families all over the country. It's important to know that this threat is completely preventable."

January 2005

It is highly recommend to measure the indoor concentration level of radon in Montgomery, Howard, Frederick counties, in Northern Virginia and in the District of Columbia
.

The EPA recommends that you fix your home when the radon level is 4 pCi/L ("Action Level") or more and we suggest that you contact a qualified radon reduction contractor about lowering the radon level if results of the above tests are over this threshold.

Another level set by the EPA is 2 pCi/L ("Consider Action Level"). At this level, the EPA recommends that you consider installing radon abatement systems in your home to reduce your indoor radon levels.
